Hello, Everyone!
https://youtu.be/KdvNd9HFXIg

I hope everyone is fine and enjoying in this stressful weird world and time.
I updated my new video on YouTube for the Kyoto Cultural Art support for Covid19.
Since Covid19 was spread, we artists and journalists have big limitation to show our ability of Art and creativities.

Especially Shows like musical concerts or museums are prohibited in so many places.

Kyoto city decided to give out some money to support artists to create arts for Kyoto City who showed what we can for Kyoto city and living in Kyoto city.
I handed in some paperworks and they accepted my ideas that I named as "TENGUE PROJECT".

Then I created some videos which has music from NY and Kyoto Japan with Japanese sceneries.

As we have difficulties to travel anywhere. I hope you can experience my hometown kyoto how beautiful it is and how special it is with original music that is done by my friends.

Please support us, "LIKE" and "subscribe to my channel", so that shows more support to Kyoto city!

Hopefully you can come visit us soon too ;-)

In this video, specifically I made a music collaborated with Kyoto traditional Art that is called "Noh" play, which my friend from elementary school is a professional artists of Noh, and want more people to know about this beauty of "Noh".

Red Dragonfly(赤とんぼ)-Improvisation w.Tadao Ishihama@ManpukujiTemple in Japan, Guest Lafayette Harris

This is the video that I edited from the one when the legendary Jazz pianist from NY, Lafayette Harris Jr visited Japan privately Fall in 2019, He came to Tadao Ishihama's Concert in Osaka, and joined him without knowing what this song is.

Someone in the Audience requested to play, as it was late Fall.
This song is a Japanese Folk song and I believe all Japanese people know this, and can sing!

They played beautifully and spiritually.
Please enjoy as this is very relaxing and calm you, take you to the other places...lol

Tadao&Laf actually have a Collaborated Album together,

"Red Dragonfly" (Japanese: 赤とんぼ, Hepburn: Akatonbo) (also transliterated as Akatombo, Aka Tombo, Aka Tonbo, or Aka Tomba) is a famous Japanese children's song (dōyō) composed by Kosaku Yamada in 1927, with lyrics from a 1921 poem by Rofū Miki. It is a nostalgic depiction of a Japanese red dragonfly seen at sunset by an infant being carried on an older sister's shoulder.

When China announced about Covid19 the first time, which was Jan 2020, I was still in my hometown Kyoto, enjoying new years celebration with my family.

Kyoto is known as a tourist place, everyday very busy for tourists everywhere as we have so many important historical places, buildings, temples, shrines, and culture.
TV news suddenly told us that Japanese airpots are the most dangerous place to be, stay away if we do not want to be infected by Corona virus.

I already had an air-tickets to go to NYC for work on the Jazz Cruise which is one week on the Cruise with Jazz Legends and visiting Caribbean islands.
It was a tough decision if I should go to NY to take this cruise or not but after so many discussions with my family in Japan and USA, I finally decided to go.

It was really normal to wear masks in Japan in general but after Corona, literally EVERYONE started wearing masks.
I saw some Chinese Tourists still came out from Tour bus then and THEY did not wear masks, they said "Japan is safe but China is dangerous. So We wear masks on the bus but not outside"

At the airport in Osaka, only Japanese passengers wore masks and hands covered.
I was so terrified whole time during the flight but somehow I got JFK safe and took a cab. Arabian Cab Driver asked me " you have severe sick? " to see my mask.
I said, "you know, Corona virus from China. Airport is dangerous and I didnt want to get any virus, masks work to protect me and others" he laughed. "well take care".

When I joined my people in NY, I was still terrified and it was really hard for me to leave home without masks, but Americans did not get how important to wear mask for ourselves and others then.

I was asked not to wear it outside as I may get attacked for the mask, it says "I am the virus".
Very hard for me to change my mind and I was already traumatized then but I tried to go with American Custom not Japanese. But still tried to cover my mouth, eyes with sunglasses, washed hands often than most Americans.
My Handmade masks

We took flights to go to Florida to get on the Jazz Cruise, it was Super Bowl Sunday. Packed everywhere. Hard to get hotels for musicians neither. We were lucky to be picked up by Cruise Crew and stayed at the hotel, got ready for the Cruise.
All the musicians took bus to the Cruise, but me, Lafayette Harris Jr(p) were on the same car with Houston Person (ts) driving, that was actually good as could have our private space.

          Christian McBride (b)

When we were getting on the cruise, at the check-in, all Americans were easy to get keys but as soon as they saw my Japanese Passport, they were panicked and asked me so many questions.

"Did you go to China or Asian countries last 14days? Have you talked to someone from China or Asian Countries recently"etc... Well, I came from Japan but Japan was not pandemic yet then so I told them that then they gave me a pass. I looked around and only Asian passengers were asked those questions and extra time to check in...

During the Jazz Cruise it was hard to get outside news as wifi didn't work well on the cruise so Actually we had a great time with lots music and networking lot. I took so many photos and wrote an article about it for the Jazz Japan magazine which is former known as legendary "Swing Journal".
All of us incl Musicians had great time on the Cruise, Houston Person Quartet did their great works as usual, and was so nice to see other amazing musicians play all day long, everyday!More over, it was really nice to hang out with musicians for sightseeings or sat together at meals and exchange stories like reunion!

When we reached KeyWest Florida, we could use wifi and saw how bad the Cruise was in Japan and pandemic going on.
Finally I really started facing it, we were still on the Cruise and most of the passengers were over 60 years old, Musicians too. Houston is over 80, so I told Lafayette we really have to be careful.
Houston Person(ts) on the Jazz Cruise2020

Luckily we all could came back to Miami safe and could go back to NY. (altho at the airport we found out my ticket was not bought and rushed buying it but at the end, we had a great time)

In NY, still same Brooklyn life was waiting and I finished the article, editing photos etc.
My article&photos in "JaZZ Japan Vol 116"

Our dear friend, DOC gave us Knicks ticket at Madison Square Garden and first time I saw Hachimura fron DC team! Japanese NBA Player!
He reminds me of my dear best friends son TOSHIKI who is a gorgeous boy in Brooklyn.
It was packed and almost full house but soon after the NBA player was found his Covid19 infection and all games were cancelled.

Lafayette had a gig with legendary Archie Shepp(ts) so we flew to Oregon for PDX Jazz festival and stayed 3 days, explored Oregon nature and music scenes.

Soon after, NYC was LockedDown on March 22 2020, all schools were closed, Parks were closed and restaurants were delivery only.

They found some sports players were infected by Covid19 so all sports games were cancelled and no more entertainment suddenly. Jazz Lincoln Center, Smalls, Vanguard.. all closed.

Kids stayed home but online classes were quite ready by then. Toshiki's mom said "Kids are home and actually we are busy helping his home works!"
We started cooking in the house, not to go out much. At Grocery shops, hard to find toilet papers, pasta, rice, soy milks, baby foods etc but vegetables, meats, other stuff were quite normal.

Whole Foods in Brooklyn

Musicians started working online, teaching, streaming live, lectures etc.
Work at home became general for most people.

Meanwhile NY Covid19 numbers kept increased and people finally started wearing masks, hand covers, facial covers.
Finally I was not the only one who was wearing masks.
BUT at the same time, Asian Harassment was started. My Asian friends were terrified to go out without any guards.

Japanese government released the announcement that the people from USA would be prohibited to get into Japan without 14days quarantine and PCR test results after March 25th

I was very luck to have my ticket to go back to Japan on 23rd. And came back to Japan safe although the airport was like biohazard.... really scary and everyone did not trust each other.

After I came back to Japan, I stayed in my room at my parents house in Kyoto for 14 days, I even did not trust myself so I cleaned everytime after I used bathroom or toilets.
Especially I have my parents who are not young at all in the same house, I was extra careful.

Some of my friends in Japan and USA worried so they called me and checked on me if I am ok.
Meanwhile I started loosing some of my good musician friends, family in USA and I became panicked.

"I am in Japan peacefully but they are fighting everyday against this invisible virus. Anything I can do? Anything I should do?"

I made some YouTube videos for Japan to let people know what was going on with my real experiences. Still now I keep making it and prolly i keep doing it till Covid19 is vanished.

My newest article in "JaZZ Japan" vol 119 just came out and it was special edition for my experiences with Covid19. It is in Japanese but my photos and article are all over 7 pages.

My article&Photos in "JaZZ Japan Vol.119"

Some people told me about conspiracy theory about this Covid19 but if you loose someone whom you expected to meet when this is settled, you can not easy to say this is because of Trump or BillG. This virus actually took some peoples lives and put us in danger.
Not a joke.
SNS became
Some kind of jokes with those irresponsible people, especially in Japan and I was really pissed off to see it anytime I saw.

Japan started almost normal life recently but after Covid19 is totally different life, prospect of life, future, world has changed. I am sure this the same case for lots people too.

I had not updated this Blog so long time since I started writing for Magazines or some Sites online with my photographies, but finally decided to write again as a journalist to let more people know what has been going on with real voices with real experiences.
Major Media tells you all? How much can you believe at this point?
What is truth and what is false information?
Only inner truth of yourself  knows.

Please stay safe wherever you are, and share love while you can.
Life is only once and enjoy safe and healthy with your love one!

To be continued...

D’Rica7 BDay wk2 - ROY AYERS @SRB BK, Toca Tues@SUTRA, DJ Questlove&Yameen @BK Bowl

This is my Bday week report 2.
It was my dear friend's new venue grand opening night on March 3rd. I knew they were having Roy Ayers for this night so I asked if I can have my Bday celebration together at SRB Brooklyn.http://srbbrooklyn.com/web/

👉👉👉https://youtu.be/ODDqyw0KQ80 Please take a look of” Roy Ayers Bday message”  for me!

As the owner's policy we were not allowed to advertise at all so I couldn't invite guests as many as I wanted but very importantly, my long term legend friend Roy Ayers and his band members who have been like my family were there for me so as the owner, Doc, Manny and Beast! Oh man, it was such a special night for me. I really didnt expect Roy Ayers to ask me to come up to the stage and sang Birthday song for me!!! OMG.... Wow it was soooooooooo special night for me! I was overwhelmed and couldnt believe what has just happened. Roy Ayers, this legendary ROY AYERS sang Birthday song for ME on the Stage!!!
And he also gave me a video private message for my Birthday. Wooooooooooooooow.... What can I say?
To think about it, I met Roy Ayers the first time when I still lived in London which is more than 13years ago or so... I met him thru Dennis Davis who used to be a Drummer for Roy. Time flies so fast!!! Wow... Ray Gaskins... John, Mark,Lee,...and more... Thank you soooo much for this beautiful long term friendship!love you guys!!!
After the show, Doc, Manny prepared Birthday cake for me... I knew Big Jeff bought cake for me too. Wow it was such a beautiful night!!! Thanks for the people who came to see me, DJ PEACE, my brother, you are awesome!!! And the girls... Thank you so much for this night!

Then after SRB, I went to local clubs to dance with a few hours more to hear some more Funk/Soul and Old School hiphop. Wow I got hyper on this day. Thanks for Jermaine to be there with me!

On my actual Birthday March 4th was quiet and relaxing. I got so many calls from unbelievable legends, video messages, facebook messages, songs sang by amazing cats... and great presents. I can not name all of the people here but I am so blessed to have you in my life and love you guys soooo much!!! Thank you again...!!! <3 <3 <3
On March 5th, my best gal in BK Mariko and her Aomori friend, Emmy-chan took me to a Bday dinner near my house. oh man... since this day, our party nights started again.
On March 6th, at Sutra the special guest was DJ Amanda Diva. Mariko and her Aomori friends came thru Sutra, there of course Big Jeff, Voodoo Ray, our princess DJ JUNE-chan, DJ Tony Touch, Pesu-kun and his GF, Ariel the owner, Toca crew, DJ Butta L, then my great friend, JAROBI from A Tribe Called Quest, Nas from ZULU Nations, Legendary KOOL HARC came thru!
Kool Herc, DJ Kool Herc and Kool DJ Herc, is a Jamaican-born DJ who is credited with originating hip hop music, in The Bronx, New York City. His playing of hard funk records of the sort typified by James Brown was an alternative both to the violent gang culture of the Bronx and to the nascent popularity of disco in the 1970s. In response to the reactions of his dancers, Campbell began to isolate the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat—the "break"—and switch from one break to another to yet another.
Using the same two turntable set-up of disco DJs, Campbell's style led to the use of two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing, using hard funk, rock, and records with Latin percussion, formed the basis of hip hop music. Campbell's announcements and exhortations to dancers helped lead to the syncopated, rhymed spoken accompaniment now known as rapping. He called his dancers "break-boys" and "break-girls", or simply b-boys and b-girls. Campbell's DJ style was quickly taken up by figures such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. Unlike them, he never made the move into commercially recorded hip hop in its earliest years.
Tony Touch shout out for Happy Birthday with my name and we danced crazy there!!! Another wonderful night. There were some accidents with my girls and boys... but it was what it was. All good with great people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Kool_Herc
On March 8th at Brooklyn Bowl with DJ Questlove and MC Yameen Allworld. That day was with Soulive before DJ Questlove. I wish I knew. I supposed to meet DJ Logic there but I just missed seeing him as I got there late. But Mariko and her friend Eri chan were there and met my good friends- Igmar Thomas and Sharief Hobley. Igmar was playing with Soulive and stayed afterwards. Then Sharief was just hanging as usual... ;-)
I met Sharief in Japan the first time while he was still playing with John Legend which is like... hmmm... 6,7 years ago??? wow...
My Dear Philly MC Yameen shouted for my Birthday also thru the whole night along with DJ Questlove's funky beats and songs and made my Bday week very special also. I love you guys, so much! Thank you so much.

D’Rica7 s BDay wk1-R.Glasper album release & ATCQ tribute in Harlem

My crazy xxth Birthday passed finally this year and I had amazing days with amazing people.
First, my JP girls got together for Indian dinner party and Karaoke night! Mariko, Shino, Kimitea, Kaori... thank you and love you so much!
On Feb 28th was our Robert Glasper's <Black Radio> release party at Highline ballroom with Yasiin Bay (AKA Mos Def), Lala Hathaway, Bilal, and more. (sold out show!!!)
Robert and his manager tried to get tix or pass somehow and they informed me that there would be an additional party the very next day. Of course I did get in for that with my girls and was sooooooooooo happy to hear who would perform for this day...!!! It was Lupe Fiasco, Ledisi, and my fav lady Meshell N'degeochello!!! and surely RG's singer, Bilal too! I was soooooo excited to hear these names!!! And the opening for this day was DJ Spinna, my friend!!! more and more excited!!!lol
On 28th DJ Questlove and MC Yameen Allworld opened the party and I heard it was all sold out, packed and hot night.
Our 29th DJ Spinna started from 7pm till 9;30pm... I knew RG, Bilal and Lupe were recording David Letterman Late show for the same night broadcasted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FIXKbUCC-bU
They actually came late for the show @highline ballroom, already Ledisi, Bilal, MeShell were hanging with their people in VIP section. Also, of course MeShell's long term musician, Mark Kelly (The Roots crew Bass player now) showed up too!!! He didnt play for this show but it's always nice seeing him!!! (Mark stop glab my back meat tho...!!!lol)
After the show, I heard there was no sound check as RG, Bilal and Lupe were late coz of the shooting for David Letterman's Late show. But it all came out great and organic, jamming and fun, funky and soulful by the end. I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooved it so much!
About the details, you can read this website. This tells you a lot what was going on.
After the gig, Me, Mariko and Wataru met some of my music friends, like Soshi, and Kayo, and the people who got press passes like Shino, Dashaun, and Rico. DJ Spinna was buying RG's T-Shirt that was $25! I didnt know that he actually buying T-Shirt like others!!! Wow... it was interesting to see him buying it actually...lol Shino and Dashaun were there for both nights, they said second night was better, but DJ Spinna said first night was better. I am sure I would say 2nd day as my real favorite singers and musicians were there for 2nd day plus I felt they were enjoying jam a lot ;-)
Right after this second night, RG experiment left for the US tour. I didnt get to see band members after their gig but its all good that I had amazing night on this day.
Also Check this site out that I helped set up for this site  bmr Japan for Robert Glasper interview. AMAZING AMAZING interview!!! http://bmr.jp/feature/detail/0000000150/
I actually got a lot hits and reputations for this article from artists, musicians, fans and the people who did not know about RG! Hey, this was honest interview and I really liked what he said!
Also RG experiment and LEDISI were on Tonight show with Jay Leno on March 19th. This is the link that you can see them perform. They were performing by the end as special guests! http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/Monday-March-19-2012/1391559

On March 2nd, Friday, it was heavy rain but went to A Tribe Called Quest Tribute Feat. The Revive Da Live Big Band w. Vinia Mojica, Dinco D & Charlie Brown (Leaders of the New School) and Dres (Black Sheep) Sadat X, Jarobi@Harlem Stage.Highlighting and reimagining works from Tribe's influential discography, acclaimed trumpeter and composer Igmar Thomas leads the Revive Da Live Big Band in a musical tribute to Tribe's trailblazing sound.Special Guests: Jarobi White from ATCQ, Buckshot (Black Moon and Bootcamp Clik), Dinco D & Charlie Brown (Leaders of the New School), Dres (Black Sheep), Sadat X (Brand Nubian),Vinia Mojica
I went there with Big Jeff and got there late.. when we got the venue, Jarobi and his crew came out...we thought ok, it might had been over..., then inside the venue, Sadat X was on the stage and the big band with Igmar Thomas was kicking it! but...wait... people were siting and very quiet. You know, me and Jeff wont be quiet with music! We got the seats but stood up and started dancing, rapping and singing together! Heeeeey Parrrrrr~~~~ty people got in the room!!!lol
In the Big Band, I saw some of my GREAT FRIENDs, like STACY DILLARD was in the front and very center with his Sax! It's always always nice seeing him anywhere! So as great key/producer RAY ANGRY, funky drummer BUTTER and Trombone STAFFORD HUNTER!And of course Meghan and IGMAR THOMAS... always always fun to get together with you guys!
There was an after party at next door. I was talking to Stacy, Stafford, Butter and Ray Angry then Hiphop crew came out!!! Sadat X!!!!!!!!!! Yeyyyyyy! He is always very coooooooooool! Love him. Dinco, Charlie Brown, Sadat X, Big Jeff and Photographer- Raheem, more people were hanging together and we really enjoyed it!Danced together, they rapped into my ears and talking about the music video that was on the stage screen.
At this venue, it was extremely hot and got sweat, some people already left. And Dres from Black Sheep came out to perform! My dear friend, Jarobi came out to the stage too! Yes, they performed together and rapped well. After the show, it was real heavy rain, when I looked around, most of my people left and I was alone without umbrella...>< I saw Ray Angry was about to leave the venue too so I got on the car with him and wen to Cleopatra's Needle. Ray was on the phone with someone and making music on the phone the whole time in the car...that was amazing scene and amazing music concept to hear while he was talking to someone... after he hang up, he told me that was... QUEEN LATIFAH!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens (born March 18, 1970),better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American singer, rapper, and actress. Her work in music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Image Awards, a Grammy Award, six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination.
There.. you know who I ran into???
Rodney Kendrick was sitting there... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Kendrick

Rodney Kendrick (born April 30, 1960) is an American jazz pianist, bandleader, composer, and producer. He has been described as a "hard swinging player and composer with a delightful Monkish wit and drive.. The time Rodney was eighteen, he had already turned professional, touring and playing keyboards with R&B and funk acts, traveled the world with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, James Brown and George Clinton. At twenty-one, he delved more deeply into jazz, moving to New York in 1981, began a career where he worked steadily, supporting Freddie Hubbard, Terence Blanchard, Stanley Turrentine, Clark Terry, J. J. Johnson, and others. He studied with pianist Barry Harris, who remained his teacher and mentor for over 20 years. Kendrick cites Randy Weston and Sun Ra as influences. In the early 1990s he served as Abbey Lincoln’s musical leader for seven years.
I had not seen him for a while, so it was very nice seeing him and his people!;-) When the rain stopped, it was already 1am and left Cleo's took a subway alone and went home..awww...BK is too far to go home from Harlem alone...>< !!!
